A Dispute Over Who Owns a Twitter Account Goes to Court

NYTimes: If you regularly tweet for your job, do you own your Twitter account or does your employer? An upcoming court case will attempt to answer that question.

Noah Kravitz, a writer who used to work for Phonedog.com, kept his Twitter account and his 17,000 followers when he left the company. Phonedog later sued him, asking for $340,000 in damages. “This will establish precedent in the online world, as it relates to ownership of social media accounts,” said intellectual property lawyer Henry J. Cittone. “We’ve actually been waiting to see such a case as many of our clients are concerned about the ownership of social media accounts vis-á-vis their branding.”
