Wide and local area network administrators seem to garner wages slightly below the norm for IT professionals, drawing an average salary of $63,500 per year and an average contract rate of $49 per hour, according to dice.com, EarthWeb’s online job board for IT professionals. Top IT salaries hover at around $110,000 and low-end offerings come in at around $30,000.
Salaries are highest in Silicon Valley, at $76,500 on average, and hourly contract rates in San Francisco, at $78, top other metro areas by quite a bit. The next highest rate can be found in New York, at $57 per hour. Silicon Valley has the highest concentration of network administrators, with 21% of all listings for available positions. However, four other cities hold more than 10% of the overall demand apiece: Los Angeles (16%), Chicago (13%), New York (12%), and San Francisco (11%).
Averages are based on 472 listings on dice.com, with cities bearing fewer than 10 listings excluded from mention. Data came from available jobs listed during September 2000. Results are based on averages or totals from the following information: salary, job type, job skills, and location.
Correction: Last week’s Salary Tracker reported that there is currently no certification offered for project managers. There are, in fact, no fewer than four. We apologize for the error.
