A new report from Gartner paints a gloomy pictures for the PC market. The research firm expects PC shipments to fall while tablet shipments continue to rise dramatically.
CNET’s Lance Whitney reported, “Worldwide PC shipments, which include desktops and notebooks, are expected to drop by 10.6 percent this year to 305 million, Gartner said. Tablet shipments are pegged to jump by 67.9 percent, hitting 202 million. And shipments of mobile phones are forecast to grow by 4.3 percent to more than 1.8 billion across the globe.”
GigaOm’s Erica Ogg added, “According to research firm Gartner, tablet shipments will pull extremely close to laptop and desktop shipments by the end of next year: it is forecasting 289 million PCs and 276 million tablets shipped in 2014. In other words, the transition to a more post-PC world should be complete by 2015.”
TechCrunch’s Ingrid Lunden noted, “Android will account for just over one-third of all devices this year, and nearly half in 2014. It’s an Android world after all.”
And The Inquirer’s Carly Page focused on another section of the report, observing, “Analyst outfit Gartner released its latest mobile statistics on Monday, which reveal that the iPad Mini accounted for 60 percent of Apple’s first quarter iOS sales. According to Gartner, customers are starting to opt for budget rather than premium tablets, a shift that has worked in the favour of the iPad Mini.”
