Cisco Buys Optical Networking Company for $271 Million

NetworkWorld: Cisco has announced its intention to purchase optical technology firm LightWire for $271 million. Lightwire specializes in integrating CMOS photonics connectivity into chips; the company’s technology provides higher-density, lower-cose optical connections in routers, switches and other networking gear.

Cisco expects to close the deal during its current fiscal quarter. Lightwire employees will become part of Cisco’s Transceiver Modules Group Business Unit and Supply Chain Operations Group.
