AMD Adds ARM Processor as It Looks Beyond x86

InfoWorld: AMD and ARM have signed an agreement that will result in AMD incorporating an ARM Cortex-A5 processor with TrustZone security into an upcoming x86 chip. Currently, most smartphones and tablets use ARM processors. Until recently, AMD, like its main rival Intel, has concentrated on x86 processors for PCs and servers. In February, AMD announced plans to begin incorporating third-party technology, like ARM’s, into its products.

In the future, AMD may make ARM chips for smartphones and tablets, but an AMD spokesman says the ARM technology in this chip will be used to add security to PCs. TrustZone technology is used to secure many mobile devices, mobile payments and streamed content.
