The Swift storage project holds a unique place in the OpenStack big tent, as one of the two original projects (the other being Nova compute) for the open source cloud platform. SwiftStack is one of the leading contributors to the Swift project and also has its own commercially supported SwiftStack Object Storage enterprise product, which was recently updated to version 3.0.
In a video interview with Datamation, SwiftStack founder and president Joe Arnold details what’s in SwiftStack Object Storage 3.0 and discussed what lays ahead for Swift in 2016.
Among the new features in SwiftStack Object Storage 3.0 is support for erasure codes, which enable users to store more data in less space. Additionally SwiftStack now has support for Amazon’s S3 storage service.
For existing users, migrating to the new release is easier than before.
“You can update the management environment separate from the storage runtime environment and we have the ability to do that in a rolling upgrade fashion,” Arnold said.
Looking forward to the OpenStack Mitaka release cycle in 2016, SwiftStack has multiple efforts underway including storage encryption initiatives. Additionally improved metadata support is coming to Swift in 2016.
