Solaris professionals
Sun Microsystems’ Solaris 8 software, touted as the dot-com grade operating system, has garnered a pile of hype in recent months. Part of the reason is that application service providers, the latest start-up wunderkinds and venture capital magnets, are frequently picking Solaris over Windows NT/2000 to support their applications. This is very good news for Sun. In mid-March 2000, International Data Corp. found that ASP sales will increase more than 20-fold by 2004, to $7.8 billion, so if Solaris remains popular, its potential gain in market share is enormous. Naturally, this also means that technology professionals familiar with the UNIX-based operating system may turn out to be some of the most coveted in the IT pantheon. So here’s a look at the current salaries and contract rates available to those of you with Solaris know-how.
Dice.com, our sister site and an Internet job board for IT professionals, contained 572 job openings for IT pros with Solaris experience in March 2000. The overall average salary was $82,000 per year, and the average contract wage was $68 an hour. Compensation was highest in San Francisco, where salaried Solaris pros made $95,000 per year, and contractors pulled in $107 an hour. We should mention, however, that there were a larger than normal number of senior-level positions available in San Francisco, driving the average up a bit.
