Computerworld:The Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) has published a new report which documented the existence 56,859 phishing sites, a new record high. Most commonly (38 percent of the time), the sites pretend to be related to financial services firms. Other popular spoofing targets included payment sites and retail sites. According to the report, the sites spoofed 392 different brands, which was also a new record.

“All manner of commerce is transacted online today and in that are opportunities for new and provocative scams, leveraging some part of the customer-enterprise relationship that is unique to the domain,” said the APWG’s Peter Cassidy. “People are tougher to fool with phishing, but they still can be in the hands of a creative scam artisan.”
