Oracle has announced its purchase of Tekelec, a firm that makes software for managing traffic on mobile networks. This is the second time Oracle has purchased a company that make products for the telecommunications market so far this year.

Enterprise Networking Planet’s Pedro Hernandez reported, “Oracle today announced that the company is acquiring mobile network management specialist Tekelec in a bid to delve deeper into the mobile services market and challenge established players like Cisco. For now, the terms of the deal are being kept under wraps. Morrisville, NC-based Tekelec is a maker of network intelligence software for all-IP network operators that helps manage and monetize mobile broadband infrastructures by enabling real-time metrics, personalized subscriber plans and providing customers faster and more stable data services.”

The Register’s Jack Clark noted, “Oracle will add Tekelec’s network signaling, policy control, and subscriber data management technologies into its suite of products for telecommunication companies served up by its Oracle Communications division. This will let the database company further extend its business into service providers’ networks, and gives it a chance to wield a particularly sticky type of product via Tekelec’s network and service control layer technology.”

Chris Preimesberger with eWeek added, “This is Oracle’s second acquisition involving the telecom market in the last month. On Feb. 4, Oracle revealed the addition of VOIP signaling vendor Acme Packet for $1.7 billion.”

All Things D’s Arik Hesseldahl observed, “Oracle said in a statement that the growth of smart mobile devices — iPhones and iPads, as well as Android phones and tablets and the like — have exponentially boosted data traffic on networks. That has created a need for service providers to better manage the new traffic loads on their networks, while also deploying new services that can make money. Tekelec’s control software is already in use by more than 300 service providers around the world. Additionally, Oracle said it will combine Tekelec’s capabilities with those of Acme Packet, which it acquired earlier this year for $1.7 billion.”
