Engadget: On Tuesday, Microsoft rolled out a new email service called Outlook.com. The new service will replace Hotmail, and it attempts to compete with Google’s Gmail service. Instead of redesigning Hotmail, Microsoft created a completely new service from the ground up, so Outlook.com doesn’t have the banner ads or the creepy targeted ads that earned criticism for Hotmail. It does have a minimalist interface, Twitter and Facebook integration, and 7GB of free storage.

In a Tweet, Microsoft reported that Outlook.com signed up 1 million users in its first six hours of availability.
