Lawmaker Proposes Ending Overtime for IT Workers

The Industry Standard: Senator Kay Hagan (D. – N.C.) has proposed new legislation that would make nearly all IT workers exempt from overtime pay requirements. The Computer Professionals Update Act (ironically also called the CPU Act) would amend the Fair Labor Standards Act (FSLA) so that employers would not be required to pay overtime to any IT worker who makes more than $27.63 an hour. Salaried IT workers and any IT worker “who is a computer systems analyst, computer programmer, software engineer, or other similarly skilled worker” are already exempt from the FSLA requirements.

The bill is co-sponsored by Sens. Michael Bennet (D. – Colo.), Mike Enzi (R. – Wyo.) and Johnny Isakson (R. – Ga.).
