HP, Intel Rethink Processor Upgrades in Servers

NetworkWorld: HP and Intel have developed a new chip-slotting technique that reduces the possibility of error when upgrading server processors–and that reduces the likelihood of system failures. Called “Smart Socket technology” the new system uses a clamp on the motherboard to install chips into the sockets correctly. “You never drop the processor down, we mechanically control the whole thing,” explained HP’s Mark Potter.

Smart Socket technology can be found exclusively on the motherboards for HP’s Gen8 servers.
