FOX News: Unnamed “officials briefed on the settlement terms” say that Google is close to a deal with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Under the terms of the agreement, Google would pay $22.5 million to the agency. That would be the FTC’s largest fine ever against a single company.
The deal would close an investigation into Google’s use of tracking cookies for Safari users. Google used special code to trick Apple’s Safari Web browser into thinking that it had blocked the tracking, when in reality Google was tracking users. Google shut down the cookies following a Wall Street Journal report on the matter.
