Google Teams with Facebook and Microsoft to Phight Phishing

Wired: Google, Facebook and Microsoft usually view each other as rivals, but the three have teamed up, along with eleven other organizations, in a new effort to stop phishing. The Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance (DMARC) group hopes to establish new email standards that would make it more difficult for bad actors to send out malicious emails that look like authentic messages.

While spam filters often catch phishing messages, some users open the messages when they find them in their junk mail folders. “The best way to protect them is to make sure the email never reaches the spam folder at all,” said Adam Dawes, a Google product manager and DMARC representative.
