Computerworld: Google has announced its plans to launch a new infrastructure-as-a-service offering called Google Compute Engine. The cloud computing service will run Linux virtual machines based on either Ubuntu or CentOS. Google says the highly scalable service will be best for enterprises that need at least 100 VMs and have compute-intensive workloads to run.

Initially, Google Compute Engine will launch as a limited preview. Costs will start at $0.145 per hour for a single core, with additional costs for networking and storage.
