Slash Gear: The Mozilla Foundation’s plan to launch its own smartphone OS is officially a go. The open source organization announced that the operating system, formerly known as “Boot to Gecko,” will be called “Firefox OS.” ZTE and Alcatel One Touch will be manufacturing devices that use the platform, and those smartphones will arrive in the first part of 2013. Network partners Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Smart, Sprint, Telecom Italia, Telefonica and Telenor will support the devices, which will launch first in Brazil.

Firefox OS is based on HTML5 and the same Linux kernel behind Android. It will run on smartphones using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors.
