Fox News: Yesterday, reports surfaced that Google had broken its own rules by participating in a sponsored post campaign designed to boost the page rank for its Chrome browser. Although it denies wrongdoing, Google has announced that it will demote Chrome in the page rankings for the next 60 days as a result of the campaign. “While Google did not authorize this campaign, and we can find no remaining violations of our webmaster guidelines, we believe Google should be held to a higher standard, so we have taken stricter action than we would against a typical site,” said a spokesperson.

According to Google, an agency hired by the company launched the paid link campaign without Google’s permission.
