Reuters: The U.S. Apple v. Samsung trial is set to begin today and is expected to last at least four weeks. Apple initiated the lawsuit, claiming that Samsung violated its patent rights by “slavishly” copying the design of the iPhone and the iPad. Samsung countersued, claiming that Apple is trying to stifle competition and maintain its “exorbitant” profits.

If the jury in the case finds in Apple’s favor, it could result in a sales ban on certain Samsung smartphones and tablets, potentially costing the company billions of dollars. The two companies have patent lawsuits pending in numerous countries.
