All Things D: According to research firm In-Stat, Apple could soon top Intel as the company that ships the most mobile processors. In 2011, Apple shipped 176 million chips in the mobile devices it sold, giving Apple a 13.5 percent market share. That put Apple in second place behind Intel, which shipped 181 million chips–a 13.9 percent market share.

Given the brisk sales of the new iPad and the iPhone 4S, it seems likely that Apple could ship more mobile chips this year than Intel does.

(Note: Most of the chips Apple ships are actually manufactured by Samsung.)
