Computerworld: Confirming an earlier report by IDC, market research firm Gartner says that Android widened its market share lead over iOS in the second quarter. Google’s mobile OS accounted for 64.1 percent of the market, up from 56.1 percent in the first quarter and 43.4 percent in the second quarter last year.

Samsung was clearly the leading smartphone manufacturer for the period with sales of 90.4 million units, accounting for 29.5 percent of the market. By comparison, Apple sold 28.9 million iPhones during the quarter.

The report notes that the third quarter results could be very different if Apple launches a new iPhone as some observers expect.
