Analyst: Apple Device Sales Could Equal Windows Sales ‘Within a Year’

The Telegraph: A new blog post from Horace Dediu at Asymco says that the number of Apple devices sold could soon equal the number of Windows devices sold. In 2004, end users bought 54 times as many PCs as Macs. However, since that time, Apple has consistently whittled away at Microsoft’s advantage. Today, users buy just 19 times as many PCs as Macs. If you include iOS devices in the total, end users buy less than twice as many Windows devices as Apple devices.

“Seen this way, Post-PC devices wiped out of leverage faster than it was originally built. They not only reversed the advantage but cancelled it altogether,” wrote Dediu. “Considering the near future, it’s safe to expect a ‘parity’ of iOS+OS X vs. Windows within one or two years. The install base may remain larger for some time longer but the sales rate of alternatives will swamp it in due course.”
