EMC’s plans for Syncplicity’s tech has come into sharper focus, months after the data storage giant snapped up the cloud file sharing startup.
During its Momentum user conference this week, EMC announced a Syncplicity connector for Documentum. The integration adds support for Syncplicity, a cloud storage and syncing platform that boasts mobile device support, to Documentum, EMC’s enterprise document management software.
The move also brings Syncplicity support to the Documentum xCP content management and business process development suite. Additionally, EMC announced the release of Syncplicity Mobile 2.0 for iOS.
Making Good on the Syncplicity Deal
The move to add Syncplicity support to Documentum was widely expected after EMC bought the cloud storage specialist in May for an undisclosed amount. EMC Information Intelligence Group president Rick Devenuti remarked at the time that the Syncplicity deal aligned with his company’s goal of enabling secure, cloud-based file syncing and sharing.
“In acquiring Syncplicity, we validate this concept by uniting enterprise ‘sync and share’ capabilities for the cloud with governance and rigor that is synonymous with Documentum,” said Devenuti.
Now, in a statement, EMC’s Jeetu Patel, VP and general manager for Syncplicity echoes the storage giant’s plans to make its mark in the hot enterprise mobility market. “The connector integration with Documentum supports a number of use cases that accelerate productivity, and a new method for getting work done,” said Patel.
The BYOD Impact on Enterprise Content Management
As BYOD takes hold in the workplace and employees spend more time on smartphones and tablets like the iPad rather than typing away at keyboards, providing mobile access to business information and enabling the automatic dissemination of up-to-the-minute content updates have emerged as new priorities for IT departments, argued Patel.
“No longer does the sales rep worry if she’s quoting the right price from her device. And employees in the field or shop floor won’t have to spend time worrying if they have the latest version of a design document, contract, or operating procedure. It’s what it should be — simple and automatic,” concluded Patel.
Syncplicity integration allows Documentum to serve as an automated content distribution system for large numbers of employees and their devices, according to the company. EMC is also pitching the platform as a secure option for transferring sensitive data that’s required for several business processes — loan applications and the like — thanks to the cloud storage platform’s emphasis on encryption and secure data transfer.
On the iOS front, Syncplicity Mobile 2.0 offers selective sync support, new mobile push notifications and support for the iPhone 5. Android users haven’t been forgotten, adds EMC. The company hopes to soon release a version for devices running Google’s mobile OS.
