Ars Technica: In a blog post, NASA has announced that it is opening up a new open source portal at code.nasa.gov. For the time being, the site will host a directory and documentation for NASA's current open source software development. Over time, the agency hopes to expand the site into a true collaboration hub that will make it easier to transition in-house projects to open development. "Will your code someday escape our solar system or land on an alien planet?" asks the blog. "We’re working to make it happen, and with your help, it will."
NASA has previously supported the development of a number of well-known open source projects, including Bugzilla and OpenStack.
