While the buzz seems to be on “the cloud,” in reality various subsectors are also hotspots. For instance, VMware’s recent moves focus on the hybrid cloud. Any Newman discusses the virtualization vendor’s latest moves. VMware’s vision of the hybrid cloud cloud got a little clearer this week with the announcement that three new providers have […]

Virtualization and cloud computing were among the leading buzzwords of 2010. Serverwatch editor Amy Newman discusses the technologies’ prospects for 2011. Virtualization, along with cloud computing, had a banner 2010. In an economic climate that was brutal and unforgiving, both technologies chugged along with nary a derailment or serious argument as to their value. In […]

Virtualization has been all the rage in enterprise data centers. As it works its way down the infrastructure food chain, how long until the popular iPhone sees virtualization? First came workstation virtualization, then came server virtualization, then the virtual desktop became a hot item. Now, virtualization can be described as ubiquitous in the data center […]

Leading research firms IDC and Gartner disagree about the prospect for cloud computing, which is clearly the most talked about emerging technology in IT today. Amy Newman dissects the debate. Read the headlines and talk to some of the vendors, and it’s easy to believe that there isn’t an organization not deploying applications to the […]

Server virtualization is a clear efficiency booster and data centers of many sizes have moved to deploy this emerging technology. Yet recent reports suggest that virtualization still has a ways to go before it is considered a default data center technique. In April, IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Server Virtualization Tracker reported that 18.2 percent of all […]

Given that a VMware acquisition of Novell (or some part of it) could significantly change the tech landscape, speculation is running rampant. More details should follow soon. At its VMworld trade show two weeks show, VMware CEO Paul Maritz disparaged the operating system, noting that it is being shunted aside as, “one of the implications […]

Among the goals of Green the Capitol, an initiative originating from the Speaker of the House’s office several years ago, is the reduction of power consumption in the Capitol facility by 50 percent in the next 10 years. IT, not a small portion of this expense, was able to do it in one year with […]

Cloud computing and virtualization deliver a host of benefits centered around flexibility and reduced costs. There is also a perception that they are more environmentally friendly options. While this may be true to some degree for virtualization, in the case of cloud computing, it is often a misconception. When an enterprise migrates to a virtualized […]

The following is an excerpt of a chapter from Practical Virtualization Solutions, a book that serves as a guide for managers and CIOs involved in planning, deploying, or managing virtualization projects. Among the topics the book covers are: how to transition your data center from being focused on the physical to being primarily virtual; a […]

In the past two weeks, storage virtualization seems to have found its way to the forefront. Two weeks ago, CommVault (NASDAQ: CVLT) took its storage management product, Simpana, to the cloud with an eye on organizations requiring more space for archiving, replacing infrastructure or looking to simplify compliance management. Commvault described the product as a […]

Could VMware be about to jump the shark? Two new developments hint at the possibility. VMware has made it clear in recent months that it has set it sights on the cloud. What impact this will have for customers and partners firmly on the ground is becoming less clear as its kefuffle this week with […]

Data center infrastructure shifts are often both dramatic and unpredictable until they are well under way. In recent months, it has crystallized that we are embarking on a post-client/server world that is more than just vapor. Virtualization and cloud computing are together redesigning the landscape of the data center. This, of course, is far from […]
