Reuters: A Shanghai court has rejected Proview Technology’s request for a ban on sales of Apple’s iPad in the Chinese city. Observers say that while the decision is good news for Apple, a higher court will ultimately decide the fate of the iPad in the country. “It’s a great help to Apple by giving it some breathing space,” said attorney Ren Wenfeng, who is not directly involved in the case. “But it’s not clear whether Apple will eventually win the trademark infringement case in China, as the crucial thing will be the ruling by the Guangdong higher court.”

Proview claims that it owns the trademark rights to the name “iPad” in China. Apple claims that it purchased the rights from a Proview subsidiary.
