RealNetworks to Sell Patents to Intel

Wall Street Journal: Intel will pay RealNetworks $120 million to purchase approximately 190 patents and 170 patent applications. Also included in the deal is software that compresses and decompresses video for streaming. In addition, seven RealNetworks employees will go to work for Intel.

The deal is “about realizing this unused asset we’ve been sitting on for several years,” said RealNetworks CEO Thomas Nielsen. “Frankly, we’re not in the market of making money off our patents like other companies, so we saw the ability to realize that value without having any material impact on our business.”
