U.S. business software maker VMware Inc (NYSE: VMW) has bought a small French company that specializes in virtualization software for mobile phones, which allows a single phone to run multiple operating systems.

VMware, the leading maker of virtualization software for computers, said on Monday it bought privately held Trango Virtual Processors, based in Grenoble, France, for an undisclosed sum.

Trango’s technology, for example, would allow a user to run Microsoft Corp’s Windows Mobile and Nokia’s Symbian operating systems on the same phone.

Palo Alto, California-based VMware makes software that allows computers to work more efficiently by running more than one operating system, thereby acting like virtual machines.

The company, which is majority-owned by EMC Corp, said in a statement that the acquisition closed last month. A VMware spokeswoman declined to say how many employees work for Trango.
