Computerworld: Intel has announced that servers using its new new Xeon E5 chips will become available early in 2012. Based on Intel’s Sandy Bridge architecture, the Xeon E5 will have up to eight processing cores per chip and will be able to run 16 threads per socket. Intel’s Kirk Skaugen said, “This is the most phenomenal chip we’ve delivered on Intel to the server market.”
The E5 will primarily be used in servers with two or four sockets. According to Skaugen, the company already has 400 server design wins for the chip.
