Samsung’s Galaxy Note II smartphone is apparently a hit with consumers. The company reported that it has shipped 3 million of the devices since its launch a little over a month ago. The device stands out for its large size, leading many to call it a “phablet.”
CNET’s Roger Cheng reported, ” Samsung Electronics said today that it had sold 3 million units of the Galaxy Note 2 after just 30 days, or three times faster than its predecessor. The figure represents an impressive rate of adoption for Samsung, which has essentially created a new category of oversized mobile phones that many have taken to calling ‘phablets.’ The original Galaxy Note was deemed a success, but took 90 days to hit the same 3 million mark.”
Lauren Goode from All Things D explained, “The Galaxy Note II is the company’s second-generation sandwich-sized smartphone, measuring six inches by three inches, with a 5.5-inch display. It was first released in South Korea in September, and came to the U.S. market and other countries in October. It’s running on a new Google Android operating system, Jelly Bean 4.1 and, as I noted in my recent review — despite it’s sometimes-awkward size, it’s a well-made phone.”
USAToday ran an AP story which observed, “The Note was one of the few 5-inch smartphone in the market when the first model was unveiled last year, making some people believe it would become a ‘tweener’ that is neither a tablet nor a smartphone. But phone manufacturers began to expand screen sizes this year. Even Apple released a bigger iPhone this year.”
TechCrunh’s Jordan Crook noted that Samsung has recently begun airing TV commercials for the Note II that feature basketball player LeBron James. “The phone looks relatively normal-sized in Lebron’s hands,” wrote Cook, “though we all know its 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display begs to differ.”
