MSNBC: Researchers from Columbia University say that HP LaserJet printers have a security vulnerability that could allow hackers to take control of the devices. The hackers could then use the devices to commit identity theft, to take control of networks or even to cause the printers to catch fire. “The problem is, technology companies aren’t really looking into this corner of the Internet. But we are,” said Columbia professor Salvatore Stolfo. “The research on this is crystal clear. The impact of this is very large. These devices are completely open and available to be exploited.”

Tens of millions of devices could be vulnerable to such an attack.
