A new report indicates that sales of Mac desktops and laptops declined sharply in June. However, PC sales in general were also down.
All Things D’s John Paczkowski reported, “It has been a slower summer than usual for Mac sales. According to the latest market data from NPD Group, Apple’s domestic Mac sales declined 5 percent year over year in the June quarter and 12 percent year over year for the month of June alone. This, despite the recent introduction of new MacBook Airs based on Intel’s Haswell processors.”
AppleInsider’s Neil Hughes noted, “The NPD data, summarized on Monday by analyst Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray, represents only a portion of Apple’s global Mac sales. But the Mac is also becoming a less meaningful part of Apple’s business, now representing just 15 percent of the company’s revenues.”
MacRumors quoted Munster, who said, “We note that we had expected an uptick in Mac sales in the month of June given updated Macbook Airs at WWDC; however, Mac units were [down] 12% y/y for the month of June according to NPD.”
Patently Apple added, “During Apple’s F3Q 2013 Conference Call yesterday, Peter Oppenheimer tried to downplay the Macs 7% decline for the month by quoting IDC’s statistics showing that global PC sales had declined 11% in the same quarter. So in context, Mac sales weren’t all that bad. In general, Oppenheimer went on to point out that Apple’s upcoming OS X Maverick and Mac Pro workstation would go a long way in boosting Mac sales overall.”
