Intel is purchasing Mashery, which offers API management tools. While Mashery is a fairly small company, this is a significant purchase for Intel because it demonstrates that the chip maker is interested in getting more involved in the software and services business.

ReadWrite’s Owen Thomas first reported the news, writing, “Intel, the chip giant, is buying Mashery, a seven-year-old company in San Francisco that specializes in linking together Web-based software and services, a company spokesperson confirmed to ReadWrite. Mashery’s 125 employees are learning of the acquisition through a companywide email sent this morning. Intel expects to offer the ‘majority’ of employees jobs when the deal closes, which is expected to happen in the second quarter. The group will remain in its current location and join Intel’s two-year-old Services Division. Terms were not disclosed, but the deal is not material to Intel’s financial results.”

TechCrunch’s Alex Williams added, “We’re hearing from a source familiar with deliberations that Intel is buying Mashery for more than $180 million, in a move that shows how the chipmaker is slowly becoming both a hardware and a software company.”

Computerworld’s Joab Jackson explained, “Mashery offers a set of tools for managing APIs (application programming interfaces) that can be deployed on-premise or used as a service in the cloud. The package includes a portal that external parties can use to access APIs, as well as caching, security tools, a user dashboard and usage reports. Mashery products have been used by organizations such as USA Today, Expedia, Aol’s Patch, Aetna and Best Buy.”

The Register quoted an Intel spokesperson, who said, “This acquisition is the next step in building an integrated Intel suite of services (cloud services, digital store fronts, location services, network services and security). Mashery brings technology and expertise in the management and exposure of enterprise APIs. Mashery’s expertise in key verticals will enable Intel to further provide user experiences enhanced by service capabilities.”
