Wired: Last month, reports surfaced that an Illinois water system may have been infiltrated by Russian hackers who caused a pump to burn out. In reality, the incident had much more mundane origins. The water pump just burnt out on its own. And the suspicious log in from a Russian IP address was a contractor who was checking in while vacationing in Russia.
“I could have straightened it up with just one phone call, and this would all have been defused,” said Jim Mimlitz, the contractor who helped set up the utility’s SCADA systems.
