ZDNet: Speaking at a cybersecurity conference in London, UK foreign secretary William Hague offered seven guidelines for the Internet that he believes every government should follow. They include the following:
- Governments should act proportionately and “in accordance with international law.”
- Government should respect intellectual property and privacy.
- Everyone should be able to access the internet.
- Users should show tolerance and respect for diversity of ideas.
- Governments should ensure the internet stays open to innovation and the free flow of information.
- Countries should promote a competitive online environment.
- Countries should work together to fight cybercrime.
Many government officials and policy makers from various countries have been calling for a collection of “rules of the road” for the Internet.
