Google has sent out invitations to a press event to be held next week in New York. While the company hasn’t said what it will announce, industry watchers speculate about the possibility of new mobile devices, possibly including a $99 Nexus tablet.

Writing for eWeek, Nathan Eddy reported, “Apple’s not the only technology giant that knows how to be coy when it comes to upcoming product announcements. Google sent out a colorful press invitation illustrating the Manhattan skyline, but provided few details other than the date and time, Oct. 29 at 10 a.m. EST; the location, Basketball City at Pier 36 in New York City; and a hint that the assembly will concern the company’s Android operating system. The announcement will also be streamed live on YouTube, according to the press invite.”

The Register called the timing of the event “crafty” and noted that it takes place “the same day Microsoft will be formally launching Windows Phone 8. It’s also less than a week after Apple is expected to announce the ‘iPad Mini.'”

The Cleveland Leader observed, “Google has reportedly been working on a number of new Nexus devices, including tablets and phones from a variety of Android device manufacturers, including Samsung, LG, and Sony. This is likely when they will show off their new additions to the Android family, giving tech journalists a chance to play with them and show them off ahead of the lucrative holiday shopping season.”

Aaron Lee and Adam Hwang from DigiTimes offered a hint about what Google might unveil at the event. They wrote, “Google, following the launch of Nexus 7 tablet models in June 2012, will unveil a Nexus tablet model for US$99 later in the fourth quarter of 2012, according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers. The US$99 Nexus tablet is equipped with an ARM-architecture single-core processor 8950 developed by China-based WonderMedia Technologies, and a HUVA TN panel made by Taiwan-based HannStar Display, the sources said. The tablet will be produced by Taiwan-based Quanta Computer.”
