Google: Oracle, Sun Failed at Java Smartphone

ZDNet: With their high profile trial underway, both Oracle and Google have presented the broad strokes of their arguments in the lawsuit that will attempt to determine whether Android violates Java copyrights. In a lengthy slide presentation, Oracle presented examples that seem to show Android copying directly from Java APIs. In addition, it cites Google executives discussing the need to obtain a Java license.

Google responded in its opening arguments with a slide show of its own. Google alleges that the Java code was freely available, so Google did nothing wrong by building Android on Java technology. Further, it asserts that Oracle is upset because it (and Sun) failed to create a successful smartphone.
