Despite being in the midst of buyout and privatization talks, Dell hasn’t stopped acquiring other companies. The PC manufacturer has purchased enterprise cloud software vendor Enstratius for an undisclosed sum.
ZDNet’s Zack Whittaker reported, “Dell announced on Monday it will acquire Enstratius, an enterprise cloud management software firm, for an undisclosed amount. Founded in 2008, Enstratius offers cloud management services to hybrid and single-cloud customers as a software-as-a-service (SaaS) offering that sits either as a hosted service or within the network. By embracing a ‘cloud agnostic’ platform, the technology works with both Dell and non-Dell customers, including OpenStack, Microsoft’s Azure, Amazon Web Services, VMware and Rackspace, just to name a few.”
The Wall Street Journal quoted Dell’s Tom Kendra, who said, “As enterprises increase their use of public, private and hybrid clouds, the need for controls, security, governance and automation becomes more critical. Dell, together with Enstratius, is uniquely positioned to deliver differentiated, complete cloud-management solutions to enterprise customers.”
CRN’s Steven Burke added, “Dell, Round Rock, Texas, said it plans to make the Enstratius offering available through its solution provider partners and will invest in additional engineering and sales talent for the company.”
GigaOm’s Barb Darrow noted, “For the past few years, Dell has plotted a tricky course as it tried to morph from a PC and server vendor to a provider of software, cloud and managed services. Toward that end it has bought companies ranging from Wyse and Boomi to bolster its cloud credibility and Quest Software for its data center management and automation tools. Like its rivals in traditional IT — companies including HP and IBM, Dell faces growing competition for enterprise and webscale workloads from Amazon Web Services.”
