NY Times: A growing number of companies are deploying their own social networks, but the tone and behavior on these networks is much different than what you might see on Facebook. The rule is “if you don’t want your company president to see it, don’t post it,” said John G. Bivona of Nikon Instruments, which recently implemented an internal social network.

Still, problems do crop up when users who don’t understand the proper etiquette for these tools post pictures of their pets or release private information more widely than they should. And some companies must work through compliance issues before deploying these systems.

Several vendors currently offer software for creating enterprise social networks. They include SAP, Cisco, Salesforce.com, Chatter, Yammer, VMware, Socialtext, Jive Software and SuccessFactors.
