ZDNet: Yesterday, reports emerged that hackers had stolen personal records for 181,604 Utah Medicaid or CHIP recipients, including social security numbers for 25,096 of those people. Now it appears the actual damage was much worse. The Utah Department of Health has revised its numbers a couple of times and now says that the hackers made off with personal data for about 780,000 people. It adds that hackers obtained SSNs for 280,000 people, including many who weren’t actually recipients of Medicaid or CHIP, but who had simply applied for benefits.
Utah state officials continue to work with the FBI to investigate the case. The hackers are believed to be located in Eastern Europe.
