Catalogic Releases Docker-Delivered ECX Copy Data Management

After tackling copy data management for VMware environments, Catalogic Software is targeting organizations that have begun incorporating Docker containers into their IT mix.

The newest version of the Woodcliff Lake, NJ-based data management specialist’s flagship product, ECX 2.1, ships with several new capabilities, including a new Docker deployment option. Docker is the lightweight virtual container platform that has sparked a growing interest in new, cloud-enabled application delivery technologies among enterprises.

ECX 2.1 extends supports installations to bare metal Linux or VMware hosts through Docker, claims the company. “There are many enhancements that come out of doing this,” Steve Kenniston, technology evangelist at Catalogic, told InfoStor.

“First, the ability to deploy the solution on bare metal for clients that don’t want to install in a VM [virtual machine] environment,” he said, noting that financial clients and other security-conscious firms prefer this setup. “This move also provides the ability to leverage the capabilities of Docker to scale out and take advantage of micro-services.”

The updated software also offers a new off-host deployment option. Whereas most of Catalogic’s customers use an in-place copy data management model were copy data is placed within their production systems, the new option enlists VMware’s APIs for Data Protection (VADP) backup technology to copy virtual machines from their production environment to a storage system supported by ECX without sacrificing functionality, the company assured.

After getting Big Blue’s stamp of approval at the IBM Edge conference last month, Catalogic announced that ECX now boasts support for NetApp’s legacy Data ONTAP 7-mode systems. Now that it’s compatible with both 7-mode and newer Clustered Data ONTAP (cDOT), ECX 2.1 can “be deployed into any NetApp environment,” boasted Catalogic.

In terms of extensibility, the company has adopted an app store approach of sorts. The new ECX Marketplace allows organizations to obtain new features, utilities and updates within their management dashboards.

“If we want to enable a new report, we can load it into the Marketplace and clients can download it and take advantage of it right away,” Kenniston said. “Additionally, with our open REST API set, if clients want to build new tools and share them, they can do so in the Marketplace.”

Ed Walsh, CEO of Catalogic, said in a statement that with the upgrade’s simplified deployment features, “an agentless architecture, and a ‘provider model’ that allows for rapid delivery of storage qualifications, we’ve built ECX the way the modern enterprise data center customer prefers to deploy and use a copy data management solution.”
