The same goes for the wages available to Linux professionals, who on average make $2,000 to $3,000 more per year than they did in February 2000, when we last examined salaries for this job type.
The overall average salary for Linux professionals is $82,500 per year, and the average contract rate is $80 per hour. The highest average salaries are in San Francisco, where Linux workers make $94,500 per year. New York Linux pros draw the highest contract rates, at an average $98 per hour. The largest concentration of Linux jobs is in northern California, where the combination of jobs in San Francisco and Silicon Valley amounts to 40% of the overall tally of Linux job openings. Finally, the job types in highest demand are systems administrators (34%) and software engineers (23%).
