IT Salary Tracker: Web Application Developers

As long as there is the Web, there will be Web application developers. A sample of assorted prerequisites for this job type reads basically like a list of today’s top IT skills: Java, Linux, UNIX, C/C++, Perl, Python, Oracle, SQL server, XML and so on down the line.

California has by far the largest concentration of Web application developer jobs, with 44% of all availabile positions listed in September 2000 on dice.com, EarthWeb’s online job board for IT professionals. Among Metro areas, Silicon Valley has the highest demand, with 19% of the total, followed by Los Angeles (14%) and San Francisco (11%). California also pays top dollar for its talent. Highest contract rates, at $78 per hour, are in Silicon Valley, and San Francisco sports the highest average salaries, at $82,500 per year. New York salaries aren’t too far behind, though, at $81,000.

Averages are based on 220 positions listed, with cities bearing fewer than 10 listings excluded from mention. Data came from available jobs listed during September 2000 on dice.com. Results are based on averages or totals from the following information: salary, job type, job skills, and location.
