Wages for Java pros are among the highest in IT, according to dice.com, EarthWeb’s online job board for IT professionals. This group made an average salary of $85,000 per year in July 2000, and an average contract rate of $83 per hour. Top-level salaries hovered at around $200,000.

Silicon Valley has the most demand for Java skills among metro areas, with 21% of all job listings. The tech haven south of the Bay also boasts the highest contract rate offerings in the nation, at an average $98 per hour. The place to be salaried is New York, where Java pros are being offered $92,500 per year on average. Boston and San Francisco both had high pay rates. No surprises this week.

Averages are based on 4,623 positions listed, with cities bearing fewer than 10 listings excluded from mention. Data came from available jobs listed during July 2000 on dice.com. Results are based on averages or totals from the following information on dice.com: salary, job type, job skills, and location.
