ITProPortal: A new report from Nielsen finds that 50.4 percent of all U.S. mobile subscribers carry a smartphone, up from 47.8 percent at the end of 2011. Slightly more women (50.9 percent) than men (50.1 percent) own smartphones. Two-thirds of those aged 25 to 34 carry smartphones, making that the age bracket most likely to have ditched their feature phones. By ethnicity, Asian Americans were the most likely to own smartphones.

Among mobile operating systems, Android continues to dominate with 48.5 percent market share, followed by iOS (32 percent), RIM (11.6 percent), Windows Mobile (4.1 percent) and Windows Phone (1.7 percent). Apple remains the top smartphone vendor.
