U.S. Jury Hands Google Mixed Verdict on Oracle

The New York Times: A jury handed Oracle a partial victory over Google in one of the most closely watched trials in the technology industry. The jurors found that Google’s Android infringed nine lines of software code in Java called rangeCheck, but did not violate other copyrights. However, the jurors could not reach agreement on whether Android’s use of Java constituted fair use.

It’s unclear what results the ruling will eventually have. It’s possible that Google could be required to pay a fine and obtain a license for Java. On the other hand, Google has moved for a mistrial, and it’s also possible that it could avoid obtaining a Java license and paying damages.

The trial now enters its second phase focused on patent infringement. After that, the third phase of the trial will consider damages.
