A new report from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech has good news for Apple. While Android is still the most popular mobile operating system in the U.S., iOS is slowing closing the gap.

AppleInsider’s Kevin Bostic reported, “Kantar Worldpanel on Monday released its latest analysis of the U.S. smartphone market for the three month period ending May 2013, finding that Apples iOS platform held 41.9 percent of sales. That figure is up 3.5 percent from the same period last year.”

FierceMobileContent’s Jason Ankeny added, “Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android mobile operating system powered 52 percent of all smartphones sold in the U.S. during the three-month period ending in May 2013, virtually unchanged from 51.9 percent in the year-earlier period, research firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech reports.”

SlashGear’s Craig Lloyd observed, “T-Mobile is the latest major carrier to start selling the phone online and in stores, and it’s said that the addition of another carrier for the iPhone has helped it take away a bit of market share from Android. During the three-month period, Kantar says that the iPhone 5 was the best-selling smartphone at T-Mobile in the US, and the device accounted for almost one-third of all the carrier’s smartphone sales during that time period. However, both AT&T and Verizon also see a huge percentage of sales coming from iPhones (60% and 44%, respectively).”

CNET quoted Kantar’s Dominic Sunnebo, who said, “The highly anticipated release of the iPhone on T-Mobile has benefited iOS in the latest three-month period, though it has not yet impacted T-Mobile’s share in the market.”
