Nokia Cutting 4,000 Manufacturing Jobs

PCMag: Nokia, the world’s largest cell phone manufacturer, has announced plans to eliminate 4,000 jobs at three factories in Komarom, Hungary; Reynosa, Mexico; and Salo, Finland. Instead, the company will move smartphone assembly to plants in Asia. “Shifting device assembly to Asia is targeted at improving our time to market,” Nokia’s Niklas Savander. “By working more closely with our suppliers, we believe that we will be able to introduce innovations into the market more quickly and ultimately be more competitive.”

The remaining workers at its European and North American factories will focus on customizing Nokia smartphones for European and American customers.

Since last April, Nokia has announced 7,000 layoffs. The company posted a loss of approximately $1.5 billion last year.
