Businesses Suffer From False Sense of Cyber-Security: Symantec Report

eWeek: A new report from security vendor Symantec reveals that small businesses may think they are more protected from cyberthreats than they really are. While 85 percent of SMBs believe they are safe from most cyberthreats, 77 percent have not taken the basic step of instituting a formal, written Internet security policy. Other key findings include the following:

  • 70 percent of SMBs say Internet security is critical to their business’ success.
  • 57 percent of SMBs say that a loss of Internet access for 48 hours would be disruptive to their business.
  • 40 percent of SMBs do not have a plan for dealing with a data breach.
  • 40 percent of all targeted cyberattacks are directed at companies with less than 500 employees.
