SFGate: Market research firm IDC has increased its forecast for 2012 worldwide tablet shipments from 106.1 million to 107.4 million. It now predicts manufacturers will ship 142.8 million tablets next year and 222.1 million in 2016.

IDC believes Apple’s iPad will continue its dominance, growing from 58.2 percent market share last year to 62.5 percent this year. “Apple’s iPad shows few signs of slowing down,” said IDC’s Tom Mainelli. “If Apple launches a sub-$300, 7-inch product into the market later this year as rumored, we expect the company’s grip on this market to become even stronger.”
