Computerworld: According to a new report from market research firm IDC, Apple became the third largest phone manufacturer in the fourth quarter of 2011, thanks to strong sales of the iPhone 4S smartphone. The company sold 37 million iPhones during the period, a 128 percent year-over-year improvement.

Nokia remained the world’s largest phone maker with sales of 113 million devices during the quarter. Samsung came in second with sales of 97 million units. The former number three, LG, slipped to fourth place.
